A two-story building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was tragically destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The National Fire Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowani, confirmed the incident, noting that the Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 AM.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered the building engulfed in flames. They swiftly took action to prevent the fire from spreading further. The fire brigade was successful in controlling the blaze and worked diligently to extinguish remaining hotspots, with assistance from the Korolevu team.

The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, housed a shopping complex with four small shops on the ground floor, including a kava shop, while the upper level contained a nightclub and the owner’s residence. Shankar, along with his wife, was fortunately alerted to the fire by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, 42. Unfortunately, the upper floor suffered total damage, with an estimated loss of $750,000.

Mr. Sowani indicated that a thorough investigation will be launched to ascertain the cause of the fire. He also emphasized the importance of fire safety, urging the public to remain vigilant in protecting their homes.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of fire and the critical need for fire safety measures. On a hopeful note, the quick response of the fire brigade likely prevented further loss, showcasing the importance of having trained professionals ready to address emergencies.

Overall, while the damage is significant, the community can rally together to support those affected and ensure that safety practices are reinforced to prevent such incidents in the future.
