The National Fire Authority has reported a significant increase in fire-related damages, rising from $23 million last year to $26 million this year. Chief Executive Officer Sowane Puamau expressed concern over this upward trend, emphasizing that proper engineering plans prior to construction are crucial to mitigating fire risks.
“The increase in damages is worrying, and we need better compliance with fire safety standards to prevent incidents and minimize potential losses,” Puamau remarked. He noted that their goal is to decrease unwanted fires by 5 percent annually, but this has proven challenging due to many homes lacking approved engineering plans.
Since November 1, four homes have been consumed by fire, contributing to a total of 173 fire incidents compared to 161 during the same timeframe last year.
As communities reflect on these statistics, it opens the door for constructive conversations about improving fire safety measures. Increased awareness and adherence to safety protocols can potentially create a safer environment for residents, helping to combat the rise in fire damage and loss. With concerted efforts from the National Fire Authority and community support, there is hope for reducing these alarming numbers in the future.
