The investigation concerning the recent boxing incident that resulted in the tragic passing of Ubayd Haider is expected to conclude within this week, according to Edwin Wainiqolo, the chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry. In an interview, Wainiqolo shared that only one individual, former South Pacific Boxing Promotion promoter Fredy Chand, remains to be interviewed.
Wainiqolo noted that they have already spoken with Mohammed Shameem, and expressed gratitude that Chand is willing to assist by coming forward for questioning. However, due to time zone differences, the planned interview with Chand could not take place as scheduled.
Once the investigation is complete, the results will be submitted directly to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. Wainiqolo indicated that should there be any need for clarification regarding the findings, a press conference will be organized to address key issues and convey the commission’s conclusions.
This investigation, while prompted by a tragic event, demonstrates a proactive approach towards accountability in the boxing community in Fiji. The willingness of individuals to come forward and assist in the inquiry reflects a commitment to transparency and the pursuit of justice.
Overall, it is hopeful that the findings will lead to improvements in safety protocols and practices within the sport, ensuring better protection for athletes in the future.
