The investigation into the boxing incident leading to the unfortunate passing of Ubayd Haider is expected to conclude this week. Edwin Wainiqolo, the chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry, confirmed this during a recent interview. With only former South Pacific Boxing Promotion promoter Fredy Chand remaining to be questioned, the inquiry is in its final stages.
Wainiqolo mentioned that they had already conducted interviews with Mohammed Shameem, and he expressed appreciation for Chand’s willingness to cooperate with the investigation, despite living overseas. The initial plan to interview Chand this week had to be postponed due to time zone differences, but the chairperson acknowledged Chand’s commendable effort to assist in the inquiry.
Once the investigation wraps up, the findings will be submitted directly to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. Wainiqolo indicated that if further clarification is needed on the findings, a press conference will be organized to address any issues that arise.
In a broader context, this investigation highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in sports, especially when serious incidents occur. As the inquiry approaches completion, there is hope that its findings will lead to necessary changes that ensure the safety and integrity of boxing events in the future.
