Fiji’s Youth in Crisis: The Alarming Rise of Drug Use and HIV Among Kids

Children under the age of 10 are facing serious challenges related to drug use and HIV. This key message was communicated by stakeholders at the inaugural youth talanoa organized by the Fiji Red Cross Society, which took place at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay on Monday.

The society expressed its commitment to protecting the well-being and resilience of Fijian communities, particularly during crises. The event was aimed at proactively addressing the growing problems of HIV and drug use within the youth demographic.

According to a statement from the Fiji Red Cross Society, Fiji is experiencing a notable increase in HIV prevalence and drug consumption among its youth, with concerning statistics indicating a rise in cases. The youngest individuals affected are noted to be below the age of 10, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable spike in drug-related offenses among the young population, and HIV cases among Fijian youth have more than doubled. This troubling trend has been fueled by a lack of awareness, societal stigma, and insufficient support systems.

Rigigia Dawai, the society’s director general, emphasized that the youth talanoa event represents a crucial initiative that empowers young volunteers to actively participate in addressing important health issues facing communities in Fiji.

“By encouraging open discussions and providing necessary resources, we have established a nurturing environment where young people can flourish and help foster a healthier, more resilient Fiji,” she remarked.

The society noted that this initiative aligns with its strategic objectives to uphold health, safety, and dignity for all Fijians.
