A resident from Wainibuku, Nakasi, has expressed urgent concerns to the government about the rising drug use among local youth. Community representative Justin Baravu highlighted that the area is grappling with a variety of social issues, including unemployment and crime, which are contributing to an alarming increase in drug-related activities among young people.
Baravu has called for stronger community outreach and an increased police presence, alongside investments in youth-focused programs to combat these challenges. She added, “Every weekend, I hear that young people no longer have respect for others, including churches and people around them. The music is loud. We need programs to address these issues, particularly as we combat unemployment.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, responded to these worries by stating that the government has initiated the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau to bolster police efforts against drug-related crime, resulting in increased arrests. He acknowledged that social problems are intertwined with crime, particularly drug use, and emphasized that while the police are enhancing their work, the growing drug issue stems from years of neglect.
This ongoing crisis echoes similar concerns raised by community leaders and officials in Fiji, including calls for a unified approach to tackle the drug epidemic effectively. Recent discussions have highlighted the importance of collective responsibility among families, community leaders, and local authorities. Ben Morrison, co-founder of INSPIRE Pacific, noted that tackling the drug crisis requires involvement from all segments of society, with emphasis on proactive family engagement and community support.
A hopeful perspective emerged from these discussions, suggesting that by coming together as a community to address the underlying causes of drug use and by strengthening support networks for families, Fiji can create a safer and healthier environment for its youth. Engaging in open conversations and promoting awareness are essential steps in forging a more positive future for the younger generation.
In summary, the combined efforts of community, government, and families will be key in mitigating the impacts of drug abuse and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for Fiji’s youth.
