Four young sailors from Fiji are competing at the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship, which started on January 14 and will conclude on January 17 in Brisbane, Australia. This event marks a significant milestone, as it is the international debut for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13).

The selection of this team came after their impressive performances at the Fiji National Sailing Championships. According to Vili Ratulu, a former Olympian and development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), part of the selection process involved evaluating the sailors’ ability to contribute financially to cover some costs, as the achieved grant does not fully fund participation expenses.

This opportunity arose after the FYA received an official invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, which showcases the growing recognition of Fiji’s sailing talent on the international stage. Despite their nerves, Ratulu believes this experience will significantly aid in their development, noting that sailing not only teaches vital skills but can also lead to career opportunities in the yachting industry. For two of the young sailors, this journey is particularly special, as it marks their first time on an airplane.

The team hopes to complete all races and place well, with Ratulu emphasizing the importance of personal achievement over competitive standings. This championship serves as a crucial step in fostering their skills and building connections within the sailing community, which could significantly contribute to the sport’s growth in Fiji.

Overall, this event epitomizes hope and resilience for these young athletes, showcasing their determination to excel in sailing while representing their country on an international platform. Their journey can inspire more interest in the sport back home, promoting future opportunities for aspiring sailors in Fiji.
