Four young sailors from Fiji are making their mark at the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Brisbane, Australia. The competition, which began on January 14 and will conclude on January 17, signifies an important milestone for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13), as it marks their international sailing debut.

The team was selected based on their performances at the Fiji National Sailing Championships, with the selection process considering their ability to assist with funding, as the government grant provided does not fully cover their expenses. Vili Ratulu, a former Olympian and development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), emphasized the necessity for sailors to contribute financially to make this opportunity feasible.

This competition was made possible following an invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, highlighting the increasing international interest in Fiji’s sailing talents. With government support enabling their participation, these young sailors are proudly representing Fiji on a global stage.

Having trained intensively in Fiji, the team faces the challenge of sailing against fellow competitors from various countries for the first time. Although feeling a touch of nervousness, Ratulu noted that this experience is vital for their development. “Sailing not only teaches essential skills but can also open up career avenues in the yachting industry,” he said. Furthermore, for two of the young sailors, this trip is particularly special as it marks their first experience on a plane.

The primary goal for the team is simple yet ambitious: “We want all four sailors to complete the races and place well,” Ratulu stated, highlighting the importance of achieving personal milestones over competitive standings. Their participation serves not only as a stepping stone in their sailing careers but also as a means of fostering connections within the global sailing community, which could lead to enhanced interest and growth of the sport back home in Fiji.

The participation of these young athletes is not merely a competition; it reflects a spirit of determination and resilience. Their journey showcases how passion for sport can unite communities and lay a foundation for future generations of sailors in Fiji. As they navigate this exciting opportunity, these young sailors exemplify the hope and potential of aspiring athletes, encouraging others to pursue their dreams in the world of sailing.
