Four young sailors from Fiji are currently competing in the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship, taking place in Brisbane, Australia. The competition, which kicked off on January 14 and will conclude on January 17, marks a significant milestone for these athletes as it is their first international event.
The four sailors—Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13)—were selected to represent Fiji after excelling at the Fiji National Sailing Championships. Vili Ratulu, a former Olympic sailor and current development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), mentioned that the selection process included evaluating the sailors’ ability to help cover some of their participation costs, as the grant they received does not fully fund their expenses. The government’s grant and the invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron enabled this opportunity for the young athletes.
While the team trained hard in Fiji to prepare for this event, this championship presents new challenges, as they are racing against competitors from various countries for the first time. Despite their nerves, Ratulu emphasized the importance of this experience in developing their skills and highlighted that sailing can lead to future job opportunities within the yachting industry. This trip is particularly special for two of the sailors, who are flying for the first time and experiencing international travel.
The primary goal for the team is straightforward: to complete the races successfully and perform commendably. Ratulu remarked, “We want all four sailors to complete the races and place well,” signifying a focus on personal achievements over competitive standings.
This event stands as a pivotal moment not only for the young sailors but also for the promotion of sailing in Fiji. Their participation may help raise interest in the sport at home, illuminating paths for future sailors to aspire to and grow within the community. This journey embodies resilience, hope, and the pursuit of dreams, setting a positive example for aspiring athletes in Fiji and beyond.
