Four young sailors from Fiji are making headlines as they compete in the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Brisbane, Australia, starting on January 14 and running until January 17. This competition marks a significant milestone for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13), who are embarking on their first international sailing experience.
The selection of these talented sailors followed the Fiji National Sailing Championships, where their skills shone through. Vili Ratulu, a former Olympic representative for Fiji and a development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association (FYA), noted that the selection process also accounted for the sailors’ ability to contribute financially, as the funding received does not cover all expenses. Ratulu emphasized, “The grant doesn’t cover everything, so the sailors had to contribute.”
The opportunity for their participation arose when the FYA received an invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, which played a crucial role in making their journey possible. With government support in the form of a grant, the young sailors are now able to represent Fiji on this international stage.
Having trained hard in Fiji, they face a new challenge as this is their first time racing against a diverse array of competitors in a foreign country. Although the team members are feeling nervous, Ratulu expressed optimism about their experience’s developmental benefits, sharing that, “Sailing teaches important skills and can lead to jobs on yachts or superyachts.” For two of the sailors, this trip also marks their first experience on a plane, showcasing an exciting opportunity for personal growth and exploration.
The primary goal for the Fijian team is clear: “We want all four sailors to complete the races and place well,” Ratulu stated. This championship not only serves as a competitive challenge but also as a foundation for fostering connections within the sailing community, ultimately contributing to the growth of the sport back home.
This international debut is not only a step forward for these young athletes but also a reminder of the potential for greater awareness and interest in sailing in Fiji. Their journey is an inspiring narrative of resilience and dedication that demonstrates how passion for sport can bring communities together and pave the way for future sailors in Fiji.
