Petero Maciu, a 21-year-old from Nawi village in Cakaudrove, is encouraging local youths to utilize unoccupied land in their communities for sustainable living. Having embraced farming at an early age, Mr. Maciu is now enjoying the fruits of his labor, tending to yaqona, root crops, and vegetables across more than five acres of family land.
Mr. Maciu expressed gratitude toward his father, Sakapo Tui, for motivating him to cultivate the land. He stated, “My father always encouraged me to make use of the land to have a better living.” He emphasized the importance of returning to the practices of their ancestors by working the land and benefiting from its produce, rather than depending on external sources for food.
Mr. Maciu revealed that he does not regret discontinuing his education after Class Eight. “I don’t want to go back to school because what I get from the land is more than what I would receive from continuing my education,” he mentioned. His commitment to farming has proven fruitful, as his first yaqona harvest in 2023 netted him over $11,000.
He markets his produce, which includes yaqona, cassava, dalo, and bananas, at the Labasa Market, where yaqona sells for $70 to $80 per kilogram. Mr. Maciu underscored that dedication and hard work are essential for success. He often walks five kilometers to his farm and frequently stays overnight to maximize his time.
“Despite the distance, I never gave up. I believe if all Fijians, especially iTaukei, utilize the land, it could resolve many issues in Fiji, such as poverty,” he stated. The income he generates supports his family, funds investment in farming tools, and even enables him to host celebrations.
To celebrate his 21st birthday in March, he surprised his family by purchasing two cows and inviting villagers to join in the festivities. Recently, he acquired a twin cab for easier transport of his crops to the market.
Looking ahead, Mr. Maciu plans to build his own house, acquire land in town, and buy a tractor to enhance his farming capabilities. His message to the youth is clear: “If you have nothing to do, make use of your time and plant the land. You will reap the rewards in due season. We have to honor God daily, who is the source of strength in our life.”
