Fiji’s Women’s Rugby League: Rising Stars Set to Shine on the World Stage!

Women’s rugby league in Fiji is witnessing an impressive increase in both participation and performance as schoolgirls and young women make significant strides in local competitions.

Teams such as the Lami Steelers, composed of young schoolgirls, have excelled in the Vodafone Cup competition, advancing to the semi-finals and demonstrating that women’s rugby is a formidable presence.

Fiji Bati coach Waisea Kativerata has commended the women’s teams for their discipline and commitment, highlighting that they often understand the fundamentals of the game better than their male counterparts. He noted, “The girls are easier to teach because they are not as influenced by rugby as boys are.”

Kativerata is enthusiastic about the prospects for women’s rugby league in Fiji. In partnership with the head coach of Buli Kula, a development pathway has been initiated to nurture emerging talent.

The “Rise Program” aims to support girls aged 18 to 21, preparing them for potential professional opportunities abroad. “With two NRLW teams, the Bulldogs and Warriors, entering the competition next year, Fijian players have an increasing opportunity to be scouted for international play,” he added.

This program focuses on equipping Fijian women to compete effectively on the global stage. Kativerata underscored the necessity of providing young players with the resources they need to thrive, both in sports and in life.

As more opportunities emerge, Fiji’s women’s rugby league is poised to become a significant force internationally, following in the footsteps of their male counterparts.
