Women’s rugby league in Fiji is witnessing a major increase in both participation and skill, with schoolgirls and young women making significant strides in local competitions. Teams such as the Lami Steelers, composed of young schoolgirls, have excelled in the Vodafone Cup competition, advancing to the semi-finals and demonstrating that women’s rugby is truly gaining momentum.
Fiji Bati coach Waisea Kativerata has lauded the women’s teams for their discipline and commitment, pointing out that they often learn the fundamentals of the game more effectively than their male counterparts. He mentioned, “The girls are easier to teach because they are not as influenced by rugby as boys are.”
Kativerata expresses enthusiasm for the future of women’s rugby league in Fiji. In partnership with Buli Kula’s head coach, they have created a development pathway aimed at nurturing young talent. The “Rise Program” focuses on girls aged 18 to 21, equipping them for professional opportunities overseas.
With the addition of two new NRLW teams, the Bulldogs and Warriors, in the upcoming year, there are growing prospects for Fijian players to be scouted for international roles. This initiative is tailored to ensure that Fijian women are fully prepared to compete on the world stage.
Kativerata highlighted the necessity of providing young players with the resources they need to succeed both on the field and in life. As more opportunities emerge, Fiji’s women’s rugby league is poised to establish itself as a formidable competitor internationally, in line with the achievements of their male counterparts.
