Minister of Youth and Sport Jese Saukuru has assured that the Fiji women’s sevens team will receive ample support during their participation in the upcoming Dubai Sevens next weekend. This statement followed a ceremonial presentation of i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva by the national women’s sevens team.
Saukuru highlighted the impressive growth of women’s rugby globally, describing it as a remarkable success story with significant potential for expansion over the next decade. He noted the introduction of initiatives such as the Women in Rugby brand and the inspiring ‘Try and Stop Us’ campaign, which have led to an increase in female participation, reaching an unprecedented 2.7 million players worldwide. Moreover, he pointed out a remarkable 28 percent increase in the number of registered female players since 2017.
Despite these advancements, Saukuru acknowledged the historical challenges faced by female rugby players in Fiji, which included discouragement, disapproval, and at times severe repercussions for their involvement in the sport. He recognized the dedication and sacrifices that many women have made in advancing the development of women’s rugby within the country.
With a budget allocation of over $4.2 million aimed at developing rugby, Saukuru reinforced the government’s dedication to nurturing talent and promoting the sport at all levels. As the team prepares for their upcoming matches, he emphasized the unwavering support from the Fijian people, urging the players to carry the hopes and dreams of the nation as they face their challenges.
The Fijiana women’s sevens team is set to leave for Dubai on Sunday, where they will compete in Pool A against Ireland, China, and Australia.
This support from the government and the community highlights a positive shift towards recognizing and empowering women in sports, paving the way for future generations of female athletes. The commitment and hard work from the players and supporters showcase a collective effort to elevate women’s rugby in Fiji and beyond.
