Fiji’s Women Make History in FIFA U20 Championship Debut

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team recently presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva. The event took place on Friday, where the President commended the team’s remarkable achievements and recognized the contributions of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.

“This is a significant accomplishment as it marks the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing in the prestigious FIFA World U20 Championship in Colombia. It is truly commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

Known for its rugby prowess, Fiji is now gaining international recognition through its football achievements. The President highlighted that Fiji has continually exceeded expectations in the sports arena, emphasizing the women’s football team’s role in heralding a new chapter in the nation’s sporting history.

He also acknowledged the obstacles the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the dedication of the coaching and management staff in preparing the team mentally and physically.

“What you have accomplished is extraordinary,” he expressed, conveying his gratitude for their unwavering commitment.

The Head of State recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families while also highlighting the essential role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.

“We will continue to support and pray for the team and management as they mentor these young women who will represent Fiji,” he said.

The Fiji U20 women’s team is set to compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth and development of women’s football within the country and inspiring future athletes.

– August 31: 6pm Fiji vs. Brazil
– September 3: 8pm Fiji vs. Canada
