Fiji’s Weightlifting Team: A Legacy of Inspiration and Future Stars

Henry Elder, the weightlifting coach for Fiji, believes that the senior weightlifters on the team serve as positive role models for the younger athletes. He acknowledges the hard work of the junior lifters, who he sees as the future of the sport, and emphasizes the importance of integrating experienced lifters in their development.

“We have senior athletes who have played a significant role in our journey’s success,” Elder mentioned. “I’m grateful to have these seasoned competitors because without them, it’s challenging for coaches to shape and achieve our goals.”

The Fiji team, consisting of 24 members, featured a number of young lifters at the recent Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. Notable participants included Fiji’s sportsman of the year Taniela Rainibogi, along with Charlie Lolohea, Poama Qaqa, Nehemiah Elder, Zion Tokona, Daniel Shaw, Simione Ravia, Suliano Tuiqalau, and Fiji’s sportswoman of the year, Miriama Taletawa.

Elder remarked that their participation has significantly strengthened the national team. “These athletes have contributed greatly, and we have a bright future ahead. I’m very excited about what we have at the moment.”
