Fiji’s weightlifting coach, Henry Elder, emphasizes that the senior members of the team serve as role models for the younger athletes aspiring to excel in the sport. While he appreciates the hard work of the junior lifters, Elder believes their growth can be enhanced by integrating experienced athletes into their training.
“We have senior athletes who have significantly contributed to our success,” he remarked, expressing gratitude for their presence. “Without them, it would be difficult for us coaches to shape and achieve our goals.”
During the recent Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Fiji showcased a diverse team of young lifters among its 24-member delegation. Notable participants included Taniela Rainibogi, this year’s Fiji Sportsman of the Year, along with Charlie Lolohea, Poama Qaqa, Nehemiah Elder, Zion Tokona, Daniel Shaw, Simione Ravia, Suliano Tuiqalau, and Miriama Taletawa, the Fiji Sportswoman of the Year.
Elder believes that the involvement of these athletes is a great asset for the national team. “These athletes have been instrumental for us, and I am very optimistic about our future.”
