Fiji’s Weightlifting Future: Senior Lifters Inspire Young Talent

Henry Elder, the coach of Fiji’s weightlifting team, emphasized the importance of senior weightlifters as role models for the younger athletes. He acknowledged the hard work of junior lifters, who he considers the future of the sport, and expressed that their development could be enhanced through the guidance of experienced members.

“We have senior athletes who have significantly contributed to our success,” Elder remarked. “I’m grateful for their presence, as it is challenging for us coaches to shape and implement our training goals without them.”

Fiji’s team, consisting of 24 members, showcased a diverse group of young lifters at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held at Vodafone Arena in Suva last week. Notable participants included Taniela Rainibogi, the Fiji sportsman of the year, Charlie Lolohea, Poama Qaqa, Nehemiah Elder, Zion Tokona, Daniel Shaw, Simione Ravia, Suliano Tuiqalau, and Miriama Taletawa, the Fiji sportswoman of the year.

Elder noted that the inclusion of these young athletes has strengthened the national team. “These athletes have been instrumental to our progress, and I am very optimistic about our future,” he stated.
