Henry Elder, the weightlifting coach for Fiji, emphasizes the importance of senior weightlifters as role models for the younger athletes on the team. He acknowledges the hard work of junior lifters and recognizes them as the future of the sport, suggesting that their growth can be enhanced by incorporating the experience and guidance of older athletes.
“We have some senior athletes who have significantly contributed to our success,” Elder stated. “I am grateful to have these senior athletes because, without them, it would be challenging for coaches to shape and achieve our goals.”
The 24-member team recently showcased a range of young lifters at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. Notable athletes included Fiji’s sportsman of the year Taniela Rainibogi, along with Charlie Lolohea, Poama Qaqa, Nehemiah Elder, Zion Tokona, Daniel Shaw, Simione Ravia, Suliano Tuiqalau, and sportswoman of the year Miriama Taletawa.
Elder believes their participation has provided a significant boost to the national team. “These athletes have been instrumental in our progress, and I am very optimistic about our future,” he expressed.
