Fiji’s Water Revolution: Unlocking Sustainable Solutions for All

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has successfully concluded 31 significant water projects throughout the nation, highlighted by the $14.8 million Waila Pipeline Project, which benefits over 330,000 residents. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, detailed that among the essential projects are 31.57 kilometers of pipeline extensions and the River Water Supply Scheme enhancements.

WAF achieved these milestones following the installation of backup generator sets at 14 major power stations, ensuring consistent water and power availability during peak hours. Tuisawau stated, “This critical infrastructure allows WAF to maintain uninterrupted services across key urban areas.”

Notably, WAF has made strides in reducing non-revenue water (NRW) from 47 percent to 45 percent, translating to millions of liters saved daily and reflecting improved leak control and efficient water usage. For the first time, WAF fully utilized its $133 million capital expenditure budget, completing vital developments, including wastewater upgrades, pipeline replacements, and initiatives targeting rural water access.

In support of water security in rural and remote maritime locations, WAF has accomplished 28 rural water projects which directly assist 7,200 individuals who previously lacked reliable water supply. This $4.5 million initiative includes constructing new water schemes, installing standpipes and showers, and providing communities with a dependable and safe water source.

Upon reflecting on the progress made, Tuisawau recognized the impact of WAF’s rainwater harvesting initiative, having delivered over 303,000 tanks across four divisions, particularly benefiting drought-affected areas.

The ongoing investments aimed at enhancing Fiji’s water infrastructure are not just critical for daily survival but also pivotal in fostering resilience against climate change and ensuring access to clean water for all citizens. These efforts signify a positive step toward sustainable water management and community empowerment amidst environmental challenges.
