“Fiji’s Water-Energy Nexus: A New Approach to Climate Financing”

The Coalition Government is set to enhance international initiatives aimed at improving water services in Fiji, especially in light of the country’s financial constraints. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted the importance of the water-energy connection, emphasizing that water delivery relies on energy availability.

He stated that it is essential to make the most of existing opportunities, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, where access to basic utilities such as water and energy is crucial for everyday survival, especially for grassroots communities. This necessity extends beyond water and energy to include vital infrastructure like roads.

Tuisawau called for a focus on the water-energy nexus at the grassroots level as a strategy to reduce poverty and effect meaningful changes in people’s daily lives. He urged that climate funding should prioritize this connection, particularly when evaluating natural spring or groundwater through advanced solar technology, including solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.

He suggested that innovative programs utilizing smart national frameworks could act as a transformative catalyst for maritime communities. Additionally, the Coalition Government has made progress in partnering with catchment landowners, having received Cabinet approval to establish a framework for compensating landowners for standing trees in these areas.

The government remains committed to engaging with all stakeholders, particularly landowners, to address their concerns within the existing legal frameworks.
