Fiji’s Water-Energy Nexus: A Game Changer for Communities?

The Coalition Government is set to enhance international initiatives aimed at improving water services in Fiji due to the limitations of the national budget. Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau stressed the importance of the water-energy connection, noting that water delivery is impossible without energy, especially when discussing climate financing.

Tuisawau highlighted the need to make the most of available opportunities, emphasizing that for Small Island Developing States like Fiji, access to essential utilities such as water and energy is crucial for the survival of grassroots communities. He pointed out that this focus should also extend to other vital infrastructure like roads.

He further stressed the importance of promoting water-energy connections at the grassroots level as a strategy to reduce poverty and bring about significant changes in daily life. Tuisawau urged that climate financing efforts should prioritize this connection, particularly in terms of exploring natural spring or groundwater resources through advanced solar technologies, including solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.

He indicated that innovative programs, guided by smart national frameworks, could act as catalysts for transformation, particularly for communities in maritime areas. Additionally, Tuisawau noted that the Coalition Government has made strides in engaging with landowners in catchment areas, securing Cabinet approval for a framework and policy that compensates for standing trees in those regions.

He assured that the Government will continue to engage with stakeholders, especially landowners, to address their concerns within existing legal frameworks.
