Fiji’s Water Crisis: What’s Causing the Shortage in Levuka?

The Water Authority of Fiji has reported that the Levuka Water System is currently facing reduced raw water flows from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This situation has arisen due to below-average rainfall in the dam catchment area and a prolonged dry spell affecting the country.

The decrease in raw water inflow has negatively impacted water production efforts, leading to lower treated water levels in the reservoir and affecting supply to customers within the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring these developments.

To help manage the situation, the Water Authority plans to implement valve operations to ration water supply to customers connected to the Levuka system during early mornings and afternoons. This strategy is intended to allow for the recovery of water levels at the dam and improve water production during nighttime off-peak hours, ultimately ensuring adequate storage to meet daily peak demands and provide fair distribution among customers.

WAF is urging customers to conserve water and suggests considering the use of storage containers or water tanks to secure a backup water supply connected to the system.
