Fiji’s Water Crisis: Authority Warns of Low Supply and Rationing Measures

The Water Authority of Fiji has reported that the Levuka Water System is experiencing low raw water flows from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This issue is attributed to below-average rainfall in the dam catchment area and ongoing dry conditions affecting the region.

As a result, the decreased raw water flows have hindered production efforts, leading to lower treated water levels in the reservoir, which in turn impacts water supply for residents within the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To help mitigate the problem and enhance water production, WAF plans to implement valve operations to ration supply for customers in the Levuka system during early morning and afternoon hours. These operations aim to restore sufficient water levels at the dam and improve production during off-peak nighttime hours, ensuring that adequate storage is available to meet peak day demand.

WAF has urged customers to use water conservatively and suggested that they consider investing in storage containers or water tanks linked to the water system for additional reserves.
