Fiji’s Water Crisis: Are Rations on the Horizon?

Three water sources managed by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) in the Northern Division are now at critical levels due to an extended dry spell impacting the area. The authority reported that both the Wainikoro and Vunika systems, situated northeast of Labasa, are functioning under critical conditions.

To address this, the Vunika system is receiving additional support from the Benau system in Labasa, while the Wainikoro system is expected to undergo water rationing. If the situation deteriorates further, the authority will provide water carting assistance.

Additionally, the Nasalasala system, located southeast of Labasa, is also nearing critical levels, raising the potential for rationing in the upcoming weeks. WAF noted that other water sources are currently operating normally.

In light of this situation, the authority will keep a close watch on water levels and valve operations, undertaking necessary repairs for roadside leaks. Details regarding potential water rationing will be announced in the coming days if conditions do not improve.
