Fiji’s VITA Revolutionizing Indigenous Tourism

The Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA) reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing indigenous tourism participation and engagement throughout Fiji, as announced yesterday.

The advocacy group presented at the two-day Indigenous Resource Owners’ Forum in Lami, attended by resource owners from Fiji’s 14 iTaukei provinces.

In a subsequent statement, VITA vice president Josefa Bau emphasized the organization’s aim to be recognized as a regional leader in resilient and sustainable indigenous tourism development.

“Our efforts with local communities, entrepreneurs, and social collectives focus on developing regenerative tourism experiences that preserve cultural heritage and natural resources,” said Mr. Bau.

“Our mission at VITA is to work closely with indigenous resource owners, helping them identify their unique strengths and challenges,” he added. “We provide them with the necessary advice, resources, networks, and support to develop sustainable and resilient tourism projects that benefit their communities. Our community-driven approach ensures that indigenous communities control their tourism destinies.”

Mr. Bau highlighted that VITA has established partnerships with local and international entities to progress in a sustainable and adaptable manner. These partners include the Ministry of Taukei Affairs (MTA), Tourism Fiji, Fijian Holdings Ltd (FHL), Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA), the National Trust of Fiji, South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), and Regenerative Vanua.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges like cyclones and floods, VITA members have shown resilience. These experiences of adaptation and strength through indigenous partnerships are crucial for creating an alliance of all indigenous Fijians connected to the tourism industry.”

To achieve its 2024-2030 targets for the indigenous tourism sector in Fiji, VITA has developed its inaugural Action Plan to guide their implementation efforts.
