The Fijian government’s strategy focuses on ensuring that affordable housing is accessible to all citizens. During a meeting with stakeholders and residents in Nadawa, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the Coalition Government’s dedication to tackling key issues in informal settlements.
He noted that a part of the upcoming National Development Plan will include strategies to address the broader challenges associated with these settlements. “I don’t want to promise that the issues will be resolved overnight. We aim to thoroughly understand the situation that has developed over the past 25 years and review previous agreements,” stated Professor Prasad.
The discussion included finding solutions to longstanding concerns, such as helping residents secure proper land titles and improving access to essential utilities like drainage, sewerage, electricity, and water.
Representatives from various government ministries, the Nasinu Land Purchase and Housing Co-operative Ltd, and local representatives attended the meeting. Professor Prasad suggested holding more discussions with all relevant parties to amicably resolve these issues for the benefit of the community.
