Fiji’s Vision: Affordable Housing for All

The government’s long-term goal is to ensure that affordable housing is accessible to all citizens of Fiji. During a meeting with stakeholders and residents in Nadawa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the Coalition Government’s commitment to tackling key issues within informal settlements.

He announced that part of the upcoming National Development Plan will include strategies to address larger problems related to these informal communities. “I cannot guarantee that all issues will be settled immediately, but we aim to gain a thorough understanding of the situation that has developed over the past 25 years and the agreements made during that time,” said Professor Prasad.

He outlined the need to find solutions to longstanding challenges such as helping residents obtain formal land titles, improving drainage systems, and ensuring access to basic utilities like sewerage, electricity, and water.

The meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Housing, the Nasinu Land Purchase & Housing Cooperative Limited, as well as local representatives. Professor Prasad proposed ongoing discussions with all relevant stakeholders to reach amicable solutions for the residents’ benefit.
