Spread the love

Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed immense gratitude following an outpouring of support from Fijians around the globe after a car accident involving him gained widespread attention online.

The incident occurred on October 18 when Mr. Toga allegedly collided with a vehicle driven by Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. Mr. Verma filmed Mr. Toga apologizing for the mishap and offering to cover the damages. Unaware he was being recorded, Mr. Toga was seen in the video sincerely apologizing and intended to offer compensation.

During their conversation, Mr. Verma requested a payment of $500, while Mr. Toga, assessing the damage as minor, proposed $200. He later communicated that he initially paid $100 and intended to pay the remaining amount the following day.

The impact of the video was profound, resonating with many viewers and leading to significant financial support for Mr. Toga. As of November 12, he had received over $3,347 through M-Paisa transfers from sympathizing Fijians worldwide. “I am very thankful,” Mr. Toga expressed in Fijian, acknowledging the generosity from supporters in the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. His statement highlighted the pervasive sentiment of unity among the community.

However, not all reactions have been positive, as reports have emerged regarding threats against Mr. Verma’s family after the video’s circulation. Mr. Toga has called for forgiveness, stating, “violence solves nothing,” and has filed a police report concerning the threats, though there has been no public response from authorities so far.

Mr. Verma, who shared the clip on Fijian Memes Hub, explained his intent was merely to identify Mr. Toga, emphasizing that the situation escalated beyond his expectations. Meanwhile, Mr. Verma’s father has expressed worry for their family’s safety and requested increased police presence in their neighborhood.

Support for Mr. Toga has been both financial and moral, with individuals like Dinesh Lal and mechanic Deo Kumar stepping up to offer assistance. Mr. Toga is contemplating legal action for defamation against Mr. Verma and has temporarily halted plans to make the final payment until the situation is resolved.

Despite the challenges he faces, Mr. Toga is profoundly moved by the kindness shown by his fellow Fijians. The Land Transport Authority’s media liaison, Geraldine Panapasa, has emphasized the need for responsible road use, especially during the festive season, further underscoring the importance of community support and understanding during difficult times.

In summary, this incident has not only revealed the challenges individuals face following accidents but has also showcased the power of community support and understanding in overcoming adversity. The hopeful note here is that kindness and generosity have shone through, uniting Fijians worldwide in compassion for Mr. Toga.
