Half of Fiji’s population lives in urban areas, as highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the launch of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu on Friday. Mr. Rabuka acknowledged the significant shift in demographics, noting that rural urban migration is a global issue that requires attention.
He posed critical questions regarding the government’s role and the support that can be provided to individuals residing in rural areas. The NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program aims to promote development in regions where people live, with a focus on harnessing Fiji’s youthful demographics. Notably, half of the country’s citizens are under the age of 30, and in the Northern Division, 63 percent of the population falls within the productive age range of 15 to 64.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized the potential of these demographics to utilize the nation’s natural resources for growth and development. The program envisions a more prosperous and resilient Fiji, aiming to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub that stimulates economic growth, provides meaningful employment, and attracts both domestic and foreign investments. He reiterated the government’s commitment to a comprehensive strategy to enhance the economy and improve the future for all Fijians.
