Fiji’s Urban Shift: A New Era of Tourism and Development

Half of Fiji’s population now resides in urban areas, a significant shift highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the launch of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu on Friday.

Mr. Rabuka noted the global trend of rural-urban migration and emphasized the need to address this issue through initiatives that support local communities. He raised important questions regarding the role of the government and development partners in providing resources and opportunities for people living in both urban and rural settings.

The NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program aims to stimulate development in the regions where people live. The Prime Minister pointed out that Fiji has a notably young demographic, with half of its population under the age of 30. In the Northern Division, 63 percent of residents are in the productive age range of 15 to 64.

Mr. Rabuka believes that this demographic presents a unique opportunity to leverage natural resources and human capital for growth. He expressed a vision for a more prosperous and resilient Fiji, committed to transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub that promotes economic expansion, generates meaningful jobs, and attracts investments both locally and internationally.

The government is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the economy and improving the lives of its citizens.
