The University of Fiji is embarking on an ambitious and innovative journey for 2025, with a particular focus on offering distinctive iTaukei academic programs. Aiming to honor and safeguard iTaukei culture, the university’s Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) is a pioneering establishment, being the only center of its kind in Fiji dedicated solely to the study of iTaukei culture and heritage.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the significance of this center in providing specialized education that positions indigenous knowledge at the forefront of academic inquiry. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center specifically for iTaukei studies—encompassing culture, language, performance, art, and craft,” she stated.

In a groundbreaking initiative, the university plans to broaden the center’s educational activities to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be appointed as adjunct professors. This development is expected to resonate positively with the local community of Lomaiviti, as the elders will share their wisdom and insights regarding their cultural heritage, including aspects of language, performance, and history.

Additionally, the University of Fiji is making remarkable progress in science and technology education, particularly in cutting-edge fields like robotics. Professor Shameem highlighted the importance of staying current with topics such as artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, stressing the need to understand their societal implications and associated risks.

The university is committed to ensuring the well-being and success of its students, with plans for 2025 centered around innovation and the establishment of unique programs that will distinguish it from other educational institutions. “Everything that the University of Fiji will be doing in 2025 will be new and innovative. We will not be repeating anything that any of the other institutions will be doing,” she stated, reinforcing the intention to lead in higher education.

The University of Fiji’s vision for 2025 emphasizes distinctive academic offerings, the preservation of cultural heritage, and advancements in technology, positioning itself as a leader in higher education not only in Fiji but also in the broader academic landscape.

In summary, the University of Fiji is set to redefine its academic approach by integrating cultural preservation with modern scientific education, promising a bright and culturally rich future for its students and the wider community. This initiative not only preserves indigenous knowledge but also equips students with relevant skills for the contemporary job market.
