Fiji’s U20 Women’s Football Team Makes Historic Debut at FIFA World Championship

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday.

The President praised the team’s achievements and expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaches, management, and the young athletes. “This is a remarkable achievement, as this marks the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, and it is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

Fiji, known for its rugby prowess, is now gaining international attention for its football successes. The President emphasized that Fiji has continuously “punched above its weight” in international sports. He reiterated the nation’s accomplishments in tournaments like sevens rugby, indicating that the achievements of the women’s football team are ushering in an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

However, he acknowledged the challenges the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their tireless efforts in preparing the team physically and mentally. “What you have done is remarkable,” he remarked, expressing his admiration for their commitment.

The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, while highlighting the vital role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you guide and mentor these young athletes who are set to represent Fiji,” he stated.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament is a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the country. It aims to inspire the next generation of athletes and unite the nation in support of its football team on the global stage.

The fixtures in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) are as follows:
August 31: 6 PM Fiji vs. Brazil
September 3: 8 PM Fiji vs. Canada
September 6: 5 PM Fiji vs. France.
