Fiji’s Turmeric Triumph: A Game Changer for Exports and Economy

Fiji’s fresh turmeric has recently received approval from the Codex Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables during its meeting in Mexico City, marking a significant milestone for the country’s agricultural sector. The committee supported Fiji’s submission for establishing a new international standard for fresh turmeric, a move that is expected to enhance export opportunities, ensure consumer safety, and promote equitable trade practices.

Representatives from Fiji’s National Codex Committee, Kemueli Seuseu and Penaia Mua, emphasized the importance of Codex certification for the country’s agricultural products, highlighting its role in food security and economic sustainability. The establishment of this standard is expected to bolster Fiji’s position in the international turmeric market by improving export quality and consistency.

Fiji’s turmeric industry has already shown remarkable growth in recent years, with export volumes expanding dramatically—from just 75 tonnes in 2013 to an impressive 3,216 tonnes in 2023. Approximately 97% of these exports are directed to the United States, with Fiji cultivating partnerships with countries such as China, India, and Kenya to further support its spice exports.

The government’s One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative, designed to promote specific products suited to Fiji’s climate and soil, plays a crucial role in the success of turmeric cultivation. While much of the turmeric is currently harvested from the wild, there is considerable potential for increased cultivation to enhance farmers’ livelihoods and contribute to economic development.

This positive trend in the turmeric export sector underscores Fiji’s dedication to sustainable agricultural practices, creating not only economic resilience but also opportunities for local farmers. The future looks bright for Fiji’s turmeric industry, with strong prospects for growth and further integration into global markets, which will ultimately benefit both the agricultural sector and the nation’s economy.
