Fiji’s Truth and Reconciliation Journey Begins: What Lies Ahead?

The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission conducted its inaugural consultation session on Tuesday, led by Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran. The purpose of these consultations is to establish the legal framework and foundational structure for the Commission.

In September 2023, Parliament approved a motion to create the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, prompting the Cabinet to form a steering committee consisting of five appointed members.

Kiran addressed concerns regarding a perceived lack of communication about the Commission’s progress, acknowledging that public discussions took time to initiate. “Over the past year, we have engaged with many of you individually and in small groups in safe environments, which were not visible on social media or in the news. These conversations aimed to understand people’s feelings and the direction we should pursue,” she said.

The Assistant Minister highlighted that the consultations have provided valuable insights from diverse perspectives. She noted a generational divide in opinions about the Commission, with younger individuals, particularly those under the age of 40, expressing minimal interest, suggesting that funding should be redirected to health and other programs instead. Conversely, older individuals, particularly those over 50, expressed feelings of pain, trauma, and fear regarding the process.

Kiran emphasized their commitment to creating a comprehensive framework informed by global principles while adapting to the local context, aided by a UN consultant. “Our aim is to capture a wide range of voices to ensure the framework addresses the needs of various sectors of society. The main objective is healing and closure,” she said.

Later this week, further consultations will take place with legal professionals and political parties, alongside a call for submissions. Plans are also in motion to conduct a national consultation that will cover the Western and Northern Divisions.
