The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is required to submit a comprehensive final report to the President, which will include the commission’s findings, public opinions, and suggestions for implementation by the government. This mandate is outlined in the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill presented in Parliament last Friday.
According to the Bill, the final report must be delivered within three months after the commission’s operational period concludes or if an extension is granted. A copy of this report must be sent to the government to facilitate the execution of its recommendations.
The Bill emphasizes that the government must take reasonable actions to implement these recommendations, depending on the resources available. Furthermore, if the government asserts it lacks the necessary resources for implementation, it must provide evidence to support this claim.
Additionally, the Bill specifies that the commission will automatically be dissolved once the final report is presented to the President.
