The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission conducted its inaugural consultation, led by Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran. This initiative is designed to establish the legal framework and foundation for the Commission.

In September 2023, Parliament approved a motion to create the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, following which the Cabinet appointed a steering committee consisting of five members.

Kiran acknowledged concerns regarding the perceived lack of communication and progress, admitting that opening discussions to the public had taken longer than anticipated. She stated, “Over the past year, we have engaged individually and in small groups with some members of the community. These meetings took place in safe environments, away from social media and news coverage, focusing on listening to people’s feelings and understanding the direction we should take.”

The Assistant Minister highlighted the diverse perspectives that have emerged during these discussions. She noted that younger individuals, particularly those aged 35 to 40, often express disinterest in the Commission, suggesting that funds could be better allocated to health and other programs. In contrast, older generations, particularly those over 50, have conveyed feelings of pain, trauma, and concern about the process.

Kiran emphasized the importance of developing the framework in alignment with global principles while tailoring it to the local context, with the assistance of a UN consultant. “Our objective is to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring that we hear a wide range of voices to create a framework that addresses the needs of various societal sectors. The primary aim is healing and closure.”

In the coming days, the Commission will hold consultations with legal professionals and political parties, and it has called for submissions. Plans are also in place to arrange a national consultation that will reach out to the Western and Northern Divisions of Fiji.
