Fijian troops deployed in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) are currently safe despite the ongoing developments in Syria. This assurance comes in light of significant changes in the region, following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has ruled for over 50 years. Reports indicate that Assad has fled Syria and is seeking asylum in Russia after rebels swiftly captured the capital city of Damascus in less than two weeks.
Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, shared that he has been in close contact with the Commander of Joint Task Force Command and representatives in the Golan Heights. He highlighted that a Fijian officer, previously stationed in Damascus, has returned safely to Camp Faour, showcasing the success of evacuation measures in place for peacekeeping missions.
According to Tikoduadua, all Fijian personnel with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those based at Camp Faour, are secure and accounted for, though the situation remains calm yet tense. He assured that there is no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers and emphasized the coordination with the United Nations and other stakeholders to monitor any further developments closely. The Minister also noted that robust contingency plans are ready to ensure the safety of their personnel if security conditions were to worsen.
Recently, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) conducted operations in the Golan Heights’ demilitarized zone to address rebel group activities. However, UN positions were not targeted, and the personnel at Observation Post 71 remained unharmed. Efforts are being made to recover equipment that was affected during a rebel infiltration.
Tikoduadua mentioned that the IDF’s enhanced security measures within the buffer zone have greatly improved the safety of UN personnel. Local communities have also voiced their support for the peacekeepers, demonstrating a collective endeavor to maintain stability in the region. The efforts and resilience displayed by Fijian troops amidst such challenging circumstances not only underscore Fiji’s commitment to international peace and security but also reflect a hopeful outlook for ongoing peacekeeping efforts in volatile areas.
This situation serves as a reminder of the vital role peacekeeping forces play in safeguarding not only their own personnel but also contributing to the broader stability in conflict-ridden regions. As conditions continue to evolve, the commitment of Fijian troops exemplifies a global partnership in the pursuit of peace.
