Neharika Gambhir, a former student of Saint Joseph Secondary School, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming Fiji’s first female analog astronaut. Living in the United States for over five years, Gambhir has pursued her lifelong dream of space exploration against all odds.

Currently working as a Crew Astrobiologist/Data Officer at the Analog Astronaut Training Center in Poland, Gambhir reflects on her challenging yet fulfilling journey. She shared that moving to the U.S. required immense effort; she juggled three jobs to support herself due to a lack of familial support. Despite the hurdles, Gambhir remained steadfast in her ambitions, earning qualifications in cyber-engineering, entering flight school, and eventually engaging in several prestigious NASA fellowships.

Her passion for space exploration ignited as a child when she would observe the moon and stars through binoculars at the age of five. This early interest transformed into a commitment to making a tangible contribution to the field of space exploration, despite societal norms pushing her to conform.

As she navigated a predominantly male industry, Gambhir faced numerous challenges, including the physical and mental rigors of astronaut training, as well as overcoming stereotypes about women in science and technology. However, she viewed these obstacles as opportunities for personal growth, enhancing her confidence and determination.

Gambhir serves as an inspiration to young women in Fiji, urging them to forge their own paths and refrain from simply following the crowd. With her steadfast belief that “the sky is the limit,” she emphasizes the importance of setting high aspirations, echoing the sentiment that great achievements are possible.

Neharika Gambhir’s story is a testament to resilience and ambition, showcasing that with hard work and dedication, barriers can indeed be broken. Her achievements not only pave the way for future generations of women in science but also illustrate the limitless opportunities available in the realm of space exploration.
