Neharika Gambhir, a former student of Saint Joseph Secondary School, has made history by becoming Fiji’s first female analog astronaut. Her journey, which she describes as both challenging and rewarding, began when she moved to the United States five years ago. Driven by a lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut, Gambhir faced numerous obstacles, including a lack of support from her family, which forced her to independently work three jobs to create a stable life for herself.

Throughout her journey, she pursued qualifications in cyber-engineering, gained experience through fellowships at NASA’s L’SAPCE Academy, and enrolled in a flight test engineering program as part of her astronaut training. Gambhir’s determination led her to her current position as a Crew Astrobiologist/Data Officer at the Analog Astronaut Training Center in Poland.

Reflecting on her childhood, Gambhir shared that her fascination with space began at just five years old when she used binoculars to observe the stars and the moon. As she grew older, her dream solidified into a passion to contribute to space exploration, sparking a desire to forge her own path in a field mostly dominated by men.

Gambhir has faced significant challenges, particularly in managing the rigorous physical and mental demands of astronaut training, as well as overcoming gender stereotypes in her profession. Yet, she views every challenge as an opportunity for growth and empowerment.

Through her story, Gambhir encourages other young women in Fiji to embrace their unique journeys and break away from conventional paths. Concluding her journey, she emphasizes a powerful message: “the sky is the limit if there are footprints on the moon.”

Neharika Gambhir’s remarkable achievements serve as an inspiration not only for women in Fiji but for anyone aspiring to chase their dreams defying societal constraints. Her journey exemplifies the incredible potential that determination and resilience can unlock.

In summary, Neharika Gambhir’s rise as Fiji’s first female analog astronaut sheds light on the importance of perseverance, representation, and the pursuit of one’s dreams, reminding us all that with courage, anything is possible.
