Former Saint Joseph Secondary School student Neharika Gambhir has made history by becoming Fiji’s first-ever female analog astronaut, a significant achievement that showcases her resilience and determination. Despite facing numerous challenges, including limited support from her family and navigating a male-dominated field, Gambhir has followed her lifelong dream of working in space exploration.

Having moved to the United States five years ago, Gambhir held down three jobs to support herself while studying to become a cyber engineer. Her relentless pursuit of a career in the space industry led her to participate in multiple fellowships at NASA’s L’SPACE Academy and ultimately to the Analog Astronaut Training Center (AATC) in Poland, where she serves as a Crew Astrobiologist/Data Officer.

Gambhir’s journey exemplifies the hard work and dedication required to pursue ambitions in fields where representation is lacking. She recalls her fascination with the stars from a young age, emphasizing that her dream to become an astronaut was a driving force in her life, despite societal pressures to conform.

Throughout her experience, she has confronted significant hurdles related to the rigorous training needed for space missions and the scarce resources in such environments. Nevertheless, she views these challenges as opportunities for growth, allowing her to build her confidence and capabilities.

Encouraging young women in Fiji to pursue their passions boldly, Gambhir emphasizes the importance of not following the crowd. She concludes her story with inspiration, reminding others that if there are footprints on the moon, then the sky truly is the limit.

In summary, Neharika Gambhir’s achievement not only marks a milestone for women in Fiji but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring astronauts and young women everywhere. Her journey highlights the possibilities that lie ahead for those who dare to dream and work hard to overcome the odds.

This reflection on her journey serves as a powerful reminder that obstacles can be transformed into pathways for success and that representation in all fields is crucial for inspiring future generations.
