Fiji’s Tourism Under Threat: The Hidden Drug Issue

The tourism sector is currently facing a significant challenge with the issue of illicit drugs, according to Damend Gounder, managing director of Yatule Resort and Spa and Tour Managers Fiji Group. He made this statement during the reopening of the renovated resort in Natadola, Sigatoka, on Monday.

Gounder expressed concerns about the potential impact of drug use within the tourism industry. He warned that if the availability and use of illegal drugs infiltrate the sector, Fiji may lose its appeal as a destination for honeymooners, family vacations, and schoolies retreats.

He urged stakeholders in the tourism industry to engage with communities and schools, promoting values and education to combat these challenges. “We have initiated programs that prioritize education, contributing to the development of young minds during critical learning stages. Our goals extend beyond commercial interests; we are dedicated to corporate social responsibility, especially concerning education and the environment,” Gounder stated.

Brent Hill, chief executive officer of Tourism Fiji, acknowledged that while drug-related issues are primarily police matters, the tourism industry remains proactive in addressing the prevalence of such activities. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a drug-free environment for tourists and noted that the organization supports the government’s efforts to tackle drug-related concerns.

“We want to ensure that no tourists engage in drug-related behavior with locals, as we aim for Fiji to remain a safe and enjoyable destination,” Hill added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu confirmed that there have been reports of tourists involved in drug cases. He highlighted the importance of information sharing among hotel operators and their security teams, stating that improved communication is essential to effectively address these issues.
