Fiji’s Tourism Surge: Will It Exceed 1 Million Visitors?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that Fiji welcomed over 640,274 visitors in the first eight months of this year. Speaking at the Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, he highlighted that visitor numbers for July and August have already exceeded the targeted average of 90,000, moving towards the country’s goal of over 1 million visitors.

Gavoka expressed confidence in achieving this target through ongoing marketing efforts, expanding air connectivity, enhancing infrastructure, and a strong commitment to sustainable tourism practices. He noted that the government has implemented specific policies and frameworks to support Fiji’s tourism goals, emphasizing that Fiji has traditionally not favored an open skies policy due to the limited and long air traffic routes in the South Pacific.

He acknowledged the changing landscape of aviation and the global shift towards liberalizing air traffic rights. “The Government has made a significant move in reassessing Fiji’s Aviation Policy. We are now open to considering Open Skies on a case-by-case basis, doing so gradually and with national interests in mind,” Gavoka stated.

He emphasized that while the government aims to create a supportive environment, collaboration with the private sector is essential for advancing the tourism industry. Gavoka concluded by asserting that Fiji is not merely a travel destination but a symbol of hope, sustainability, and resilience.
