Fiji’s Tourism Sector Takes a Sustainable Leap with Inaugural Recycling Forum

Several resorts and hotels have confirmed their participation in the first-ever Tourism Recycling Forum organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited.

Set to take place on September 18, 2024, the event will be hosted at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, in partnership with Tourism Fiji, Paradise Beverages Limited, and Tanoa Hotel Group.

This Forum represents a significant advancement for Fiji’s tourism industry, highlighting its crucial contribution to the national economy and its pledge towards environmental sustainability.

The event will gather resort and hotel operators from Suva, Nadi, and other regions to address shared recycling challenges faced by WRFL and to launch an innovative program aimed at recovering used Paradise Beverage glass bottles from participating locations.

Amitesh Deo, the Founder of Pacific Recycling Foundation, expressed his excitement for the initiative.

“The Forum provides a unique chance for hotels and resorts to work together to improve recycling practices. As we start this journey, it’s evident that recycling and effective waste management are vital for environmental sustainability.”

Deo pointed out the growing importance of eco-friendly practices in the wake of COVID-19.

“Modern travelers are increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and prefer destinations that align with their values. Our commitment to recycling and sustainability has become essential. This Forum will empower our tourism partners to adopt best practices and proudly demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility.”

By engaging in this event, resorts and hotels will be instrumental in promoting recycling initiatives and advocating for sustainable tourism. Their participation will not only adhere to global standards and attract eco-conscious travelers but will also contribute to decreasing dependence on open dumps and landfills for waste disposal.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, will officiate this landmark event.
