Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that Fiji welcomed over 640,000 visitors in the first eight months of this year. Speaking at the Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, Gavoka noted that visitor numbers for July and August have exceeded the targeted average of 90,000, putting the country on track to reach its goal of over 1 million visitors.
Gavoka expressed confidence in achieving this target through ongoing marketing efforts, expanding air connectivity, developing infrastructure, and committing to sustainable tourism practices. He highlighted that the government has established policies and frameworks aimed at meeting Fiji’s tourism objectives. Historically, Fiji has not supported an open skies policy due to limited air traffic in the South Pacific region.
Recognizing the changing dynamics of aviation, Gavoka indicated that the government acknowledges the global shift toward liberalizing air traffic rights. He mentioned that the government is taking a significant step in reviewing Fiji’s Aviation Policy and is now evaluating the possibility of Open Skies on a case-by-case basis, a process guided by national interests.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the government’s role is to foster an enabling environment for the tourism industry, while collaboration with the private sector is crucial for propelling the sector forward. He ended by framing Fiji not just as a travel destination, but as a symbol of hope, sustainability, and resilience.
