Fiji’s Tevita Waranaivalu Triumphs Against All Odds

Rewa football midfielder Tevita Waranaivalu has dedicated his recent award to his family and teammates, who have supported him through tough times. Waranaivalu made history as the first Fijian player to receive the inaugural Digicel Fiji Premier League Golden Ball Award during the Fiji Football Association’s award ceremony held at the Sugar Cane Growers Building in Lautoka on Friday night.

The player from Naisomua, Tailevu, reflected on the challenges he faced over the past two seasons, including injuries and weight issues. “I have been through a lot,” he expressed. “There have been many ups and downs, especially after getting injured at the start of the season. Despite these challenges, I was determined to finish the season.”

Waranaivalu noted that he had spent time on the bench, often playing only two to three minutes per game, yet he never lost hope and continued to work hard, especially on his diet, after struggling with weight. “Every time I went on the national team, I was overweight, but I believed in myself and my abilities,” he added.

He emphasized the unwavering support from his family throughout his career. “They have always been there for me, backing me up wherever I play. This award is also a testament to the entire team. Without them, I wouldn’t have achieved this. We’ve grown significantly as a team,” he said. “The collective spirit has helped us endure financial difficulties and personal struggles, and that’s how I managed to win this award. I dedicate it to my two sons, Richard and King David.”

Earlier this month, Waranaivalu also claimed the player of the tournament title during the Police Inter Formation Championship 2024 held in Nausori.
