The termite problem in Fiji has escalated significantly, according to Mohammed Zakariah, the executive director of Flick Hygiene. In a recent interview in Lovu, Lautoka, he expressed concern about the extent of the infestation, stating, “When we actually rolled out the termite baiting system project two weeks ago, we went into houses and I would say it is really bad.” Zakariah emphasized that the situation requires a manageable approach due to its widespread nature.
To combat this issue, Flick Hygiene has begun raising awareness about the importance of termite management systems. Drawing parallels with Australia, where a termite code mandates inspections before purchasing a home, Zakariah believes a similar strategy should be implemented in Fiji to address the severity of the problem.
Since launching the termite baiting program on October 19, Flick Hygiene has already installed the system in over 200 homes throughout the western division. The company was awarded a government contract to initiate a baiting program targeting Asian subterranean termites, with 1,000 houses identified in collaboration with Bio Security Fiji.
This ongoing effort signifies a proactive step toward managing pest infestations, and with continued awareness and action, there is hope for mitigating the termite threat in Fiji.
Overall, as the community rallies for better pest management solutions, there is potential for improved living conditions and increased property value, encouraging residents to take action before purchasing homes.
