The Fijian government, through the Ministry of Trade, is collaborating with the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) to develop a sustainable funding model aimed at shaping the nation’s telecommunications landscape. As TAF embarks on its strategic plan for 2025-2029, the authority acknowledges the need for additional resources to tackle the challenges ahead, particularly in achieving its ambitious objectives.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted the government’s commitment to adequately supporting TAF, recognizing the crucial role a well-resourced regulatory body plays in fostering a vibrant telecommunications sector. Kamikamica reassured that the ministry is conscious of the financial strains that regulators face and is diligently working to ensure TAF receives the necessary funding for success.
Furthermore, TAF is addressing its operational challenges, such as its backlog of audits and annual reports, with a goal to resolve these issues by the conclusion of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The authority is also putting in place new corporate policies, including a comprehensive Finance and Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual, and introducing a new Financial Management System to enhance operational efficiency.
TAF recently unveiled its first strategic plan, which sets a promising direction for the future of telecommunications in Fiji.
This initiative not only aims to strengthen regulatory capacity but also seeks to ensure that Fiji’s telecommunications industry is prepared to meet the evolving demands of the sector, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to governance and economic growth.
Summary: The Fijian government is working with the Telecommunications Authority to create a sustainable funding model as part of TAF’s strategic plan for 2025-2029. The emphasis is on addressing funding challenges while improving operational efficiency, aiming to foster a competitive telecommunications environment in Fiji.
