Fiji is launching a significant initiative aimed at addressing its underground economy, with the establishment of a specialized task force focused on tax compliance. The Tax Compliance Task Force, revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad, is designed to investigate unreported and untaxed economic activities within the country.

Prof. Prasad emphasized that the task force’s mission is not a “witch hunt” but rather a push for equitable tax payments among all citizens. He acknowledged that the majority of businesses and citizens are fulfilling their tax obligations, stating that only a small fraction is likely engaging in tax evasion. He articulated the need for strategies to address these cases, highlighting the detrimental effects that deliberate tax evasion can have on Fiji’s economy.

The full scope of unreported financial activities within Fiji remains unclear, and the task force’s work is expected to provide crucial insights into these economic disparities. FRCS CEO Udit Singh explained the importance of quantifying the shadow economy, indicating that efforts to develop a comprehensive understanding of taxpayers’ infractions will be underway, with a framework expected to be established within two months. Collaborative efforts with international agencies, including the Australian Tax Office, are also anticipated as part of this initiative.

Nitin Gandhi, chair of the task force and an experienced chartered accountant, noted that the evolving economic landscape in Fiji presents challenges, particularly with the rise of multinational enterprises and issues concerning tax avoidance and evasion. He cautioned that these practices threaten the integrity of the tax system and the overall economic stability of the nation.

Overall, this initiative represents a proactive approach by the Fijian government to foster a fair tax system, promote economic integrity, and enhance compliance. By shining a light on the shadow economy, Fiji may pave the way for greater transparency and trust in its financial systems, ultimately contributing to a more robust economy.

In summary, Fiji’s establishment of the Tax Compliance Task Force is a commendable step towards reinforcing the integrity of its tax system and ensuring that all citizens contribute their fair share to the economy.
