Hansel McCaig, a representative of the Tritons Swimming Club, was among the many competitors at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals, which kicked off yesterday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

Competing in 11 individual events and four relays, McCaig reported a successful outing, securing victories in four individual events and one relay, as he shared with The Fiji Times.

He noted the significant presence of young swimmers at the event, seeing it as a promising sign for the sport’s future in Fiji. “The younger kids are definitely coming up, and it’s good to see that the future of swimming in Fiji is developing in the right direction,” he remarked.

McCaig expressed a desire for more swimmers to participate, emphasizing the importance of having newer athletes step up as senior swimmers retire, which also encourages them to excel within their age groups.

He praised the performances of the youngsters on his team, attributing their success to rigorous training. “The kids in our club are doing very well, and it’s good to see some talent out there that has definitely been honed over the past months,” he said.

He added that the improvement of younger swimmers pushes everyone to elevate their skills. “It generates better stimulation in terms of development, and when they get better, they push us to get better and become better role models, so it’s a win-win for both sides,” he concluded.
